People don’t vote because they see a lack of choice. Most (90+%) senators and presidents of the last 50 years have been bought and paid for. Red or blue, they work for the same people. When that is true for so long, you start getting discouraged and stop voting. Moreover, people’s lives have been getting harder and harder for over 50 years. In the 1950s, it was totally normal to buy a house, a car, and send all 5 of your kids to college and retire living perfectly comfortably, all on one unimpressive income. But over time, people started getting paid (percentage-wise) less and less while working longer and longer hours. Gone are the days where a normal person can stay informed and engaged in politics, because when you’re so worried about making ends meet, those sorts of things fall by the wayside.
